St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, often called the “Notre Dame” or “Cathedral” of Park Slope, is a beloved landmark in the neighborhood. Built in 1888 in the Gothic Revival Style, Envoie orchestrated a team of specialty consultants to oversee the replacement of the clay tile roof, high priority masonry repairs and stained-glass window stabilization, in order to secure the exterior envelope of the building before the Church embarks on a future comprehensive restoration.  One the first major challenges of the project was removing a 40’ spire which had become unstable as a result of Hurricane Irene.  The Church plans to replicate the spire with lighter weight materials in the future.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organize the project team and help create a comprehensive bid package combining the various specialty drawings.

  • Devise a filing strategy for the work.

  • Devise a best approach for maximizing the value of the work performed while the scaffold/protection was in place, including prioritizing the long term stabilization of the project while further fundraising (for future projects) could continue.

  • Engage a safety consultant to evaluate the construction logistics

  • Liaise with neighborhood regarding construction impacts.

  • Provide detailed cost reporting and accounting.

SPECIAL COMPLEXITIES

  • The project required stabilization of delicate historical materials and particularly the removal of the 40’ spire from the church which required a specialty crane and full block shutdown.

  • The project had an initial review with the Landmarks Preservation Commission for authorization to replace the existing clay tile roof with standing seam copper.

  • There was no lead architect on the design team so Envoie stepped in to orchestrate the design consultants.

  • The property adjoined a NYCDOE school and Envoie acted as a liaison in securing an access agreement.

  • This project required oversight from the Brooklyn Diocese and Envoie acted as liaison.

  • The logistics and sequencing were extremely complex and uncovered existing conditions required continual scope adjustment.
