Pacific Library

Brooklyn, NY

Pacific Library, Brooklyn’s first Carnegie library, was heralded for its dignified Beaux Arts design upon completion in 1903. For over a century, the library has served the community, but many of its spaces remain inaccessible. The renovation will transform one of Brooklyn’s busiest neighborhood branches into a modern, accessible, and community-centered facility while preserving its historic character. Designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, the comprehensive restoration and expansion includes upgraded infrastructure and accessibility, enhanced public and program spaces for all ages, and new outdoor gathering areas. The branch, located at the crossroads of several neighborhoods (Boerum Hill, Park Slope, Fort Greene, and Prospect Heights) will continue serving the growing needs of the Prospect Heights community for the next century.

“The Pacific Library was the first Carnegie library to be built in Brooklyn. Our first reaction was to take on the responsibility of restoring the elegant building to its initial glory and to peel off the many additions and changes inflicted upon it in the past century, unveiling its beauty”
