Building for the Arts

New York, NY

Theatre Row is an off-broadway complex located on the South side of 42nd street, between 9th Avenue and Dyer Avenue in NYC’s Theatre District. Historically located in an area full of peep shows and adult entertainment venues, it was developed by 42nd Street Development Corporation (now Building for the Arts) in 1978 into a series of theatres, studios and office spaces. Working closely with the board and key staff members, we completed a physical assessment and preliminary programming of Theatre Row’s existing facilities, which includes six theatres of varying capacities, six rehearsal studios, support spaces, and office space. Following the completion of the masterplan, we managed the façade renovation and signage replacement that reestablished Theatre Row’s presence on 42nd street, and the renovation of the public spaces of its historic building which greatly improves patron circulation, access and experience.

“I have found a welcoming home at Theatre Row again and again … There is no more iconic location, and the building is filled with a terrific set of intimate theaters that bring artists and audiences together in the best of ways.  I look forward to making many more memories in Theatre Row.”
